Sri Lanka punches well above its weight as a wildlife destination. For an island of its size, the diversity of species and the accessibility of its national parks are genuinely remarkable. Our Sri Lanka wildlife tours cover the island’s best safari parks in itineraries built around serious wildlife time, not rushed half-day visits squeezed into a broader holiday.
Yala holds one of the highest leopard densities of any national park in the world. It also supports large elephant herds, sloth bears, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species. We include early morning and late afternoon game drives to maximise sighting opportunities. The Department of Wildlife Conservation Sri Lanka manages Yala and provides current park status updates.
Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park and one of its least crowded. The park centres on a series of natural lakes called villus, which attract a wide range of wildlife. Leopards, elephants, and sloth bears are all resident here. Wilpattu suits travellers who prefer quieter, less commercialised safari experiences.
Udawalawe is the best park in Sri Lanka for elephant sightings. The park holds a permanent population of over 500 elephants and sightings are consistent year-round. It also neighbours the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves receive care before returning to the wild.
Minneriya National Park hosts the famous Gathering, one of Asia’s largest wildlife spectacles, where hundreds of wild elephants converge around the Minneriya tank between July and October. We time itineraries to include this where possible.
